African telecom giant stepped up its global technology strategy this week at MWC Barcelona, announcing new partnerships and innovation initiatives to accelerate digital infrastructure, fintech services, and enterprise connectivity across its African markets.

The announcements were made during the global telecom gathering held from March 3 to March 6, 2026, where telecom operators, technology firms, and regulators unveiled next-generation connectivity projects.

MTN executives used the platform to strengthen alliances with global technology providers, promote Africa’s growing digital economy, and expand access to advanced services such as 5G, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence.

Speaking during a technology leadership session on Tuesday, March 4, 2026, the company said its strategy focuses on scaling digital platforms while expanding connectivity infrastructure across emerging markets.

“Partnerships are essential to unlocking Africa’s digital potential,” Mupita said during the event in Barcelona. “Through collaboration with global technology leaders, we are building platforms that support innovation, financial inclusion, and economic growth across the continent.”

MTN operates in 19 markets across Africa and the Middle East, serving more than 290 million mobile subscribers, according to the company’s latest operational update.

The group has increasingly positioned itself as a digital platform provider rather than a traditional telecom operator, investing in mobile financial services, enterprise solutions, and broadband infrastructure.

At MWC Barcelona, MTN showcased initiatives focused on network modernisation, fintech expansion, and digital services for enterprises and small businesses.

The group’s mobile money platform remains one of the largest in Africa, processing billions of transactions annually and supporting financial inclusion across underserved communities.

Industry leaders attending the conference highlighted the importance of partnerships in scaling connectivity. Speaking at the event on March 4, 2026, emphasised the role of telecom companies in enabling digital transformation.

“Mobile connectivity continues to drive economic growth and innovation worldwide,” Granryd said during a policy session organised by the global mobile industry body that hosts MWC Barcelona.

For African technology ecosystems, MTN’s engagement at the conference signals deeper integration with global telecom innovation cycles. Expanded partnerships can accelerate infrastructure investments, cloud adoption, and digital services that support startups, fintech platforms, and SMEs across the continent.

Telecommunications infrastructure remains a critical foundation for sectors such as e-commerce, logistics technology, digital payments, and remote services.

With global telecom leaders converging at MWC Barcelona, MTN’s push for partnerships highlights Africa’s growing role in the next phase of global digital expansion.
